Stage description:
The first of the five stages of the Tour du Val d’Hérens begins along a side valley, the Val d’Hérémence.
The entire route lies at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and offers spectacular views of the valley, the majestic Grande Dixence dam and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The trail follows a scenic route along the western flank of the valley and crosses alpine pastures before emerging onto a natural gem: the Essertze ponds.
These peaceful ponds alternate with peat bogs dating back over 13,000 years. Along the route, you can stop for refreshments at the Essertze hut. As you progress, the view of your destination becomes increasingly spectacular. The Grande Dixence is the world’s largest gravity dam.

The Cabane d'Essertze is situated at an altitude of 2,191 metres, in the municipality of Hérémence, on the edge of the prestigious 4-Vallées ski area, some 400 metres below the Greppon Blanc ski lift and a 90-minute walk from Thyon-Les Collons.
The chalet is accessible by road.
