La Grande Dixence reopens on 4 June 2026
On the occasion of the Corpus Christi weekend, the Grande Dixence will reopen to the public from Thursday 4 June 2026. An iconic site in Valais and a major reference in Swiss hydroelectric heritage, the world’s highest gravity dam will offer a new season focused on discovery, immersive experiences and high-altitude activities. Visitors will also have the exceptional opportunity, during this first opening weekend, to enjoy an unobstructed view of the Première Dixence dam before the gradual rise in the waters of Lake Dix.
An immersion in the heart of the world’s highest gravity dam
The site’s flagship activity, the guided tour of the dam, allows visitors to explore the impressive internal galleries of Grande Dixence and delve into the inner workings of a unique feat of engineering. Blending history, construction techniques and the challenges of Alpine hydropower, this immersive experience offers privileged insight into one of Switzerland’s largest hydroelectric structures. Visitors will also be able to reach the dam’s crest by cable car or on foot via hiking trails, and enjoy exceptional panoramic views.
Families will be able to take part in a treasure hunt inspired by a young-adult detective story about the dam, written by author Clarisse Bauwens. Integrated into the guided tour, this interactive investigation invites participants to solve various puzzles throughout the dam’s galleries. The answers can be found in the guide’s explanations as well as on the site’s information panels, encouraging both children and adults to observe and listen carefully.
Following natural events that occurred in July 2025, the AlpinLine zip line will not be operational this season. To compensate for this unavailability, the site is introducing a new activity: an axe-throwing area. Accessible from the age of 14, this facility will feature four throwing lanes and will complement the range of experiences offered on site.
The climbing wall will also be open throughout the summer season. Combined with walking areas and various tourist facilities, it adds to a diverse range of activities allowing visitors to discover Grande Dixence from different perspectives, blending sport, nature and heritage.
The Grande Dixence also develops tailored programmes for companies, schools and groups. School trips, corporate days, team-building events or themed excursions can be organised on request, combining guided tours, recreational activities, catering and entertainment.
The Hotel du Barrage will also reopen on 4 June 2026, along with its restaurant. To mark the reopening, a special menu will be offered on Thursday lunchtime featuring local produce: asparagus and cured ham duo, perfect egg, pork tenderloin with morel sauce, and a strawberry dessert.
Practical information and access
Due to adjustments linked to the new natural hazard map, visitors are advised to carefully follow signage regarding road access, parking areas and camper van facilities.
The shuttle bus service to Grande Dixence will resume from 27 June 2026.
