FairTrail

Fairtrail - for respectful coexistence in the mountains

Fairtrail is an initiative promoting the harmoniouse sharing of hiking and biking trails. It encourages everyone to adopt a respectful attitude towards other users - hikersm cyclists or people walking with dogs - as well as towards nature, agriculture, wildlife and flora. In the mountains, we all share the same space.

Launched in Graubünden in 2019, the initiative quickly expanded to other regions, includins Valais. Fairtrail is based on a simple idea : prioritising consideration over restrictions. Through dialogue between locals and visitors, genarations and different outdoor activities, it promotes peaceful coexistence on the trails.

More than just a label, Fairtrail is a true mindset. It encourages people to slow down, observe, greet each other, make space and respect the places they pass through. Simple actions make all the difference : adapting your speed, staying on marked trails, closing pasture gates, respecting animals and taking your waste home with you.

To support these good practices, the Fairtrail Code clearly and accessibly summarises the essential behaviours to adopte. The goal is not to impose rules, but to encourage responsibility so everyone can sustainably enjoy the mountains.

In Val d'Hérens and elsewhere, Fairtrail reminds us that the mountains are a place of freedom to be shared with respect.

Safety
  • Plan your outing carefully  : Choose a route adapted to everyone's physical and technical abilities and take weather conditions into account. Remember to note emergency numbers before setting off.
  • Proper equipment is essential : Use a bike in good condition and suited to the terrain. Wearing a helmet is essential. Gloves, glasses and a windproof jacket are strongly recommended for your comfort and safety.
  • Adopt responsible behaviour : Control your speed, especially on descents and shared section of trail. Respect other trail users. During breaks, always stop on the side in a visible place. To encourage coexistence, avoid heavily frequented bisses and hiking trails.
