Randonnée pédestre
Evolène - Arolla - Aiguilles Rouges - Evolène
Val d’Hérens
This route is for experienced and well-equipped walkers only. It takes three days and includes several stages.
Starting from Evolène, you will go up on a path with a view over the villages in the direction of La Gietty, then to the Alpage de l'Etoile and its "chottes", passing by the Tsalé de la Cretta. Continue to the Remointse de la Coûta on mountain paths (white, red and white). From there, the path goes down to La Gouille. Spend the night there or push on for another hour to reach the village of Arolla and its hotels.
Evolène - La Gouille via the Etoile mountain pasture: 11.5 km / 4h40
Start your 2nd stage and go to Pra Gra and its remointse by the heights of Arolla. The forests will soon give way to alpine pastures, then to a more mineral environment, made of rocks. You will enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole Val d'Arolla and the legendary surrounding peaks, such as the Pigne d'Arolla, Mont Collon or the Aiguille de la Tsa, to name but a few. Before arriving at the Cabane des Aiguilles Rouges, the path can be quite vertiginous. Spend the night at the hut, and don't forget to book your place in advance!
La Gouille - Cabane des Aiguilles Rouges via Arolla: 10.3 km / 4h44
The last stage will take you around the Mont des Ritses, through a typical alpine landscape. For this third stage, good orientation skills and good weather are required. If the conditions are not favourable, return down the path to the Lac Bleu. In both cases, return to the Alpage de l'Etoile in the direction of Evolène and take the path above that of the outward journey, in the direction of the Niva. You will then come back down by the same path as on the outward journey in the direction of Evolène, or you can continue to Lac d'Arbey before coming back down.
