THE OSSONA VINEYARD

HISTORY
In the past, the inhabitants of the hamlet of Ossona already cultivated vines on the sunny hillside between Ossona and Gréferic at an altitude of 950 m. The grape varieties were Rhine and Pinot Noir. Thanks to the sustainable development project (PDR), the municipality of Saint-Martin has revived the vineyards of Ossona by planting Solaris and Divico.

Early 1960s: abandonment of the hamlet and vineyards of Ossona.
April 2007: Solaris planted (800 m²).
Fall 2010: first Solaris harvest.
April 2014: clearing of the new vineyard.
April 2015: planting of Divico (700 m²).
Autumn 2017: first Divico harvest.
The Ossona vineyards are tended by the elders of the municipality of Saint-Martin and vinified by the Paradou winery.

GRAPE VARIETIES
The two grape varieties selected for the Ossona vineyard are interspecific varieties resulting from crosses between classic European varieties and wild vines of American and Asian origin that possess genes resistant to the main vine diseases, namely downy mildew and powdery mildew. Compared to traditional European varieties, their use drastically reduces the need for phytosanitary products to protect the vines from disease.

SOLARIS
The white variety is Solaris, developed by the Institute of Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany. This early-ripening variety produces rich, full-bodied and highly aromatic wines (passion fruit, citrus).

DIVICO
The red grape variety is Divico, created by the Swiss Agroscope Research Station from a cross between Gamaret and Bronner. It produces full-bodied wines with pronounced, supple tannins and a very colorful robe. The complex, expressive bouquet is dominated by black fruits (cherry) and spices.
