In the Valais, an atypical and proud canton that is to Switzerland what Corsica is to France, a small and exceptional music festival is held every summer between July and August.
In these mountains and high valleys, which in their time seduced Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Marguerite Yourcenar, the small village of Les Haudères has a 19th century chapel where a series of high quality concerts - mainly chamber music and choirs - are given. The festival has been going on for almost 20 years now, and its success is undeniable: the 200 or so tickets for each concert are snapped up as soon as they go on sale! We heard the Terpsycore Quartet perform a rare Beethoven quintet in C major, which the composer intended to be balanced for all instruments, as well as a Brahms sextet, a formation in which this great Romantic excelled. His String Sextet No. 1 was a great success at its premiere in Hanover in 1860.
